Signs of Labor: When to Call Your Midwife (And What to Do in the Meantime!)

As you get closer to welcoming your little one, it’s perfectly normal to wonder, “Is this it?” While labor can start in different ways for everyone, knowing what to look out for and when to call your midwife can bring some peace of mind. But hey, while you’re waiting for the big event, why not have a little fun? Let’s dive into the signs of labor and some delightful ways to pass the time!

Early Signs of Labor

Before things get serious, your body might give you a few gentle hints that labor is on the horizon. Here’s what to watch for:

1. Lightening (Baby Drops)

  • You might notice your baby has settled lower into your pelvis, making you feel a bit lighter on top (yay for breathing easier!) and a bit heavier down below (hello, frequent bathroom trips!). This is your baby getting ready for their grand entrance!

2. Braxton Hicks Contractions

  • These are like your body’s warm-up routine before the main event. Braxton Hicks contractions are irregular and usually go away if you rest or drink water. Think of them as practice runs—no need to grab your hospital bag just yet!

3. Increased Vaginal Discharge

  • As your cervix softens and prepares for labor, you might notice more discharge. If you see a bit of pink or a streak of blood, this “bloody show” is a sign things are moving along. But remember, labor could still be a few days away.

4. Loss of Mucus Plug

  • The mucus plug, which has been keeping your cervix sealed, might make its exit in one go or bit by bit. It’s a good sign that your body is gearing up, but no need to rush just yet—labor might still be a little while away.

5. Nesting Instinct

  • Suddenly feel the urge to scrub the floors or organize the baby’s closet? That’s the nesting instinct kicking in! Embrace it—it’s your body’s way of getting ready for baby. Just don’t overdo it; you’ll need that energy later!

6. Diarrhea or Nausea

  • Your body might decide to clear out the system with some diarrhea or nausea. It’s not the most glamorous sign, but hey, it’s all part of the process.

7. Back Pain and Cramps

  • Persistent lower back pain or cramping could mean your body is getting ready for the big event. Time to get cozy, maybe with a warm bath or a gentle massage from your partner.

Signs of Active Labor

When things start getting real, here’s what you’ll likely experience:

1. Regular, Strong Contractions

  • These contractions are the real deal! They’re regular, getting stronger, and won’t disappear no matter how much water you drink. If they’re coming every 5 minutes for at least an hour, it’s time to give your midwife a call.

2. Water Breaking (Rupture of Membranes)

  • Whether it’s a dramatic gush or a subtle trickle, if your water breaks, it’s time to note the details (color, odor, time) and contact your midwife.

3. Cervical Dilation and Effacement

  • Your cervix will be working hard to open and thin out to make way for your baby. Your midwife will check for this as labor progresses.

When to Contact Your Midwife

You should reach out to your midwife in the following situations:

  • Contractions: When your contractions are strong, regular, and coming every 5 minutes for an hour (or as we’ve discussed in your prenatal visits).
  • Water Breaking: If your water breaks, no matter if contractions have started or not.
  • Bleeding: If you experience heavy or bright red bleeding.
  • Decreased Fetal Movement: If you notice your baby isn’t moving as much.
  • Severe Pain or Discomfort: If something feels off or if you’re in pain that doesn’t ease with rest.

Fun Things to Do in Early Labor

Now, let’s talk about the fun stuff! Early labor is often a waiting game, so why not make the most of it with some lighthearted activities? Here are a few ideas:

1. Bake a Birthday Cake for Baby

  • What better way to celebrate your baby’s imminent arrival than by baking their first birthday cake? Choose your favorite recipe (or try something new!), and enjoy the sweet smells filling your home. Plus, it’s a great distraction from those early contractions.

2. Whip Up Some Labor Cookies

  • Got a sweet tooth? Why not bake a batch of cookies to keep your energy up? You can even freeze some dough for later—it’s the gift that keeps on giving!

3. Dance Party!

  • Put on your favorite tunes and have a little dance party in your living room. It’s a fun way to get those feel-good endorphins flowing and help baby wiggle down a bit more.

4. Take a Walk

  • A gentle stroll around the block can help ease early labor discomfort and encourage your baby to move into position. Bonus points if you stop to admire the flowers or chat with neighbors!

5. Watch a Comedy

  • Laughter is great for relaxation! Pick your favorite funny movie or show and let yourself enjoy some lighthearted moments. You might even forget about those contractions for a bit!
